Wildlife

The Highlands include some of the most beautiful upland scenery in Scotland, from rugged high mountains to deep sea lochs. There are also some of the best examples of the ancient Caledonian pinewoods that used to fill most glens, and the great area of open peat land known as the Flow Country. Each of these provides opportunities to see special birds and other wildlife.

Ben Eighe National Nature Reserve

Situated amongst remnants of ancient Caledonian pinewood, Beinn Eigh Reserve, looking onto Loch Marie, is surrounded by impressive mountain scenery. It’s also home to a diversity of wildlife, including golden eagle, red deer and pine martens.

Bird Watching

The area is rich in many kinds of bird life although not all of it can be easily seen! On shore, the mudflats, saltmarshes and beaches support many different  species of wading birds, ducks and other birds which feed on fish, shellfish and invertebrates.

Dornoch Firth

The extensive mudflats are of great importance to wintering waders and wildfowl.

Munlochy Bay

This nature reserve is home to heronries, migrating geese and a host of wading birds and wildfowl.

Udale Bay

A few miles from Cromarty on the north road, this nature reserve is among the best estuarine mudflats in the country. A mecca for birdwatchers who come to see countless ducks and geese.

Black Isle Wildlife & Country Park

Dolphins
